A pressure vessel fabricator tenders a 4.2 m inside diameter shell in 38 mm ASTM A516 Grade 70 plate and receives four quotations that all read "40 mm x 3200 mm". Two of those machines cannot pre-bend both plate ends in one pass. One needs eleven passes to close a shell that a four-roll machine closes in four. The fourth carries CNC compensation for springback on high-yield steel. The nameplate is identical on all four quotations. The cost per finished shell is not.

That difference is settled long before the contract, in the specification document. A plate rolling machine is bought against an envelope rather than a single number, and the envelope has to be written in the buyer's terms: plate grade, finished diameter, weld seam tolerance and shells per shift.

      Working definition

A custom plate rolling machine specification is the set of seven values that determine what a machine will produce: rated thickness, the yield strength at which that thickness is rated, working length, minimum rolling diameter, roll configuration, pre-bending capability and control type.

## What a Custom Plate Rolling Machine Specification Controls

The specification controls four physical outcomes: the thickest plate the machine will bend, the smallest diameter it can close, the widest plate it can hold and the number of passes one shell needs.

Suppliers publish those limits as a range rather than a single machine. Nantong Shengli Heavy Industry Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd., which manufactures under the Hengdeli brand, lists more than 100 rolling machine models inside a maximum forming envelope of 180 mm thickness and 4000 mm working length. The buyer's task is to find the model whose limits sit just above the real product mix, because every extra millimetre of capacity is paid for in frame weight, drive power and floor space.

Table 1. The six values that turn a rolling machine request into a quotable custom specification.

## The Four Numbers That Decide Whether a Spec Holds Up

Rated thickness means nothing until a yield strength is attached to it. A machine rated at 40 mm in ASTM A36, with a 250 MPa minimum yield, keeps about 96 percent of that capacity on ASTM A516 Grade 70 at 260 MPa, about 70 percent on EN 10025 S355 at 355 MPa and roughly 52 percent on API 5L X70 at 485 MPa.

        100%

        96%

        EN 10025 S355, 355 MPa

        70%

        API 5L X70, 485 MPa

        52%

Indexed from minimum specified yield strength. The reference grade behind any quoted capacity figure must be confirmed against the manufacturer's own load calculation.

### Rated Thickness and the Steel Behind It

Rolling torque scales with yield strength rather than thickness, so every capacity figure is quoted against a reference grade that is often left out of the offer. Ask for it in writing. A 40 mm machine sold on an A36 rating forms about 28 mm of S355, and that difference decides whether the machine covers the next order or only this one.

        250 MPa
Reference yield behind most rated capacities

        70%

        150-250 mm
        Edge allowance over finished width

        1.2-1.5x
Top roll to minimum shell diameter

### Minimum Rolling Diameter

The smallest inside diameter a machine can close is tied to the top roll diameter. As a planning rule, a three-roll machine closes a shell at roughly 1.2 to 1.5 times the top roll diameter, while a four-roll machine with a side roll reaches tighter ratios because the plate is supported on both sides of the top roll. A 4.2 m tank course and a 500 mm pipe cannot come off the same roll set.

### Working Length and Edge Allowance

Working length must exceed the finished plate width, not match it. Fabricators add 150 to 250 mm for end trim, pre-bending overhang and run-out at the plate edges. A 3200 mm machine finishes a 3000 mm shell course comfortably, and a 4000 mm machine covers most 3600 mm courses.

### Pre-Bending and Springback

Pre-bending removes the flat spot left at each end when the rolls first grip the plate. A machine that pre-bends both ends in the same setup eliminates a separate press operation and one crane lift per shell. On S355 and X70 plate, springback can exceed what a mechanical stop compensates for, which is where CNC control with stored profiles earns its cost.

## Three-Roll and Four-Roll Machines in OEM Production

A four-roll machine costs more up front and normally wins on any product running above about 200 shells a year, because it removes one pass and one crane handling from every shell.

The geometry explains the difference. A three-roll machine presses the plate between a top roll and two bottom rolls, so plate ends have to be worked separately unless the machine is a double-pinch or universal type. A four-roll machine adds a side roll that holds the plate against the top roll and pre-bends it in the same pass.

        Three-roll configuration

- Lower purchase price with a simpler hydraulic circuit

- Symmetrical, pull-down, oblique and universal variants cover most work

- End pre-bending needs a separate operation on basic models

- Strong fit for low-volume runs and medium plate

        Four-roll configuration

- Both plate ends pre-bent in a single pass

- Fewer crane lifts and shorter cycles on long shells

- CNC versions hold diameter repeatability across a run

- Higher capital cost and a heavier foundation

Where both configurations can hold the same tolerance, the deciding number is the pass count at the thickest plate in the mix, not the pass count on a thin sample.

## Application-Specific Specs: Tanks, Wind Towers and Line Pipe

The same 4000 mm working length produces three different machines, because a tank course, a wind tower section and a line pipe are specified against different tolerances and different plate grades.

Sourcing across borders adds a second layer to the specification: spare-part logistics, documentation and service response. The markets a manufacturer already serves are usually listed on its [export client page](/customer/export-client.html), and repeat orders from existing customers say more about field reliability than any brochure.

## Rolling Capacity Inside a JCOE Pipe Mill

A JCOE line is specified against wall thickness, pipe diameter and cycle time, and the pre-bending station decides how clean the longitudinal seam will be.

On JCOE production the plate moves through edge milling, pre-bending or crimping, J-ing and C-ing forming, tack welding, internal welding, external welding, mechanical expanding, chamfering and straightening. Transmission pipe commonly runs from 406 mm to 1422 mm outside diameter, and the crimping geometry set at the first station limits what the forming press can close further down the line.

- Wall thickness and outside diameter range for the finished pipe

- Crimping geometry at each pipe end, expressed in arc length

- Pass count and cycle time measured at the maximum wall thickness

- Interface height, line speed and control handshake with the forming press

## Writing an RFQ a Supplier Can Quote Without Guesswork

An RFQ that lists only thickness, width and price produces quotations that cannot be compared. Six additional items make the offers converge on the same machine.

- State the plate grade and its minimum yield strength, not only the thickness.

- Give the finished inside diameter and the tolerance band for the closed shell.

- State the finished plate width and the edge allowance you intend to add.

- Confirm whether both plate ends must be pre-bent in a single pass.

- State the control level: manual, NC or CNC with stored springback profiles.

- Ask for the reference grade behind every capacity figure in the offer.

## Verification, Acceptance and Handover

Acceptance testing belongs on the buyer's own plate, at the rated thickness and the rated yield strength, not on a sample kept in the supplier's warehouse.

- Closed shell diameter measured at three points along the length

- Weld seam gap uniformity along the full longitudinal joint

- Flat spot length at both pre-bent ends

- Diameter repeatability across three consecutive shells

A machine that passes a test on 25 mm sample plate tells you nothing about how it behaves on 38 mm S355. Test at the limit of the specification, not below it.

Ask what the [documented quality control process](/faq/how-do-you-ensure-product-quality.html) covers before the pre-shipment inspection, and write the test plate grade into the contract rather than the covering email.

## Practical Answers for OEM Buyers Nearing Purchase

### Can a machine rated for A36 be used on S355 plate?

Yes, at reduced capacity. S355 at 355 MPa minimum yield is about 1.4 times the strength of A36 at 250 MPa, so the practical limit falls to roughly 70 percent of the A36 rating, about 28 mm on a 40 mm machine. Ask the supplier to confirm that derating against its own load calculation before the order.

### What minimum diameter can a four-roll machine reach?

Plan on 1.1 to 1.3 times the top roll diameter for a four-roll machine with a side roll, against 1.2 to 1.5 for a three-roll machine. If the smallest shell in the mix is 800 mm, that ratio sets the top roll diameter and therefore the frame size.

### How much edge allowance belongs in the working length?

Add 150 to 250 mm over the finished plate width. A 3000 mm course fits a 3200 mm machine, a 3600 mm course needs 3800 mm or more, and 4000 mm covers most tank and tower courses cut from stock plate.

### What should the acceptance test include?

Four measurements at the rated limit: closed shell diameter, weld seam gap uniformity, flat spot length at both pre-bent ends, and diameter repeatability across three consecutive shells. Record all four on the buyer's plate grade at the rated thickness.

The specification is the real subject of the contract. Written against the plate grade, the finished diameter and the pass count, it turns four identical nameplates into one deliverable machine.
